Rector's Message

FR_ED
My dear people,

The words we hear during this Advent-Nativity season “Prepare the way of the Lord” should be a clarion call for the priorities of our life.  Advent is a good time to look at what is important and ask, is it really what it seems at this moment? Christmas beckons us to ask what I bring to greet the Christ Child.

From ancient times, the season was of shortened days while people saw the daylight giving way to longer evening darkness.  The harvest was complete and the wagon wheel from its gathering was tasked for the Advent wreath with four candles marking the journey.  Some saw Advent as a mini-Lent where they could spiritually prepare for the feast of the Nativity while others prepared to be baptized and received into the church.

For all the faithful, it was a time of ‘preparing’… one’s home for the Christmas season but most especially one’s heart to welcome the King of Kings to be born in the lowly stable.  Francis of Assisi introduced us to the crèche with its animals, straw, shepherds and Holy Family with the child Jesus in the manger, setting the theme and reminding us of the truly significant part of the season.

As we proceed forward through this busy time of visiting family, office socials and house decorating, remember that we await CHRIST-mas and should tidy up the inner sanctuary of our hearts through prayer, fasting and a visit to the confessional.

Have a blessed season!

Msgr. Ed
